A useful capsule wardrobe is not a strict uniform or a beige-only aesthetic. It is a compact system of pieces that fit your life, your climate and one another.

Start with a three-word brief

Before buying anything, choose three words for how you want to dress: perhaps relaxed, polished and feminine. Use them as a filter. If a piece only serves one of those words, it probably will not earn enough wears.

The 12-piece foundation

  1. A sharply cut blazer
  2. A relaxed white or ivory shirt
  3. A fine-gauge knit
  4. A clean crew-neck tee
  5. Dark straight-leg denim
  6. A fluid tailored trouser
  7. A column skirt
  8. An uncomplicated day dress
  9. A weather-right trench or long coat
  10. A refined flat
  11. A low, walkable heel
  12. A structured everyday bag
Do not optimise for the fantasy version of your life. Build for the week you actually have.

The 80% rule

Each new piece should work with at least 80% of the capsule. Photograph three complete outfits before removing the tag. If styling it requires another purchase, it is not filling a gap—it is creating one.

Before you buy

Check fabric composition, seam finishing, opacity, care instructions and whether the shape works with the shoes you already own. Cost per wear matters more than the number on the tag.
